The romantic misadventures of a schizophrenic bachelor. Franky is stuck in a directionless rut of cold isolation. He lives in a hauntingly bare apartment and works a dead-end job. As a uniquely spirited young man in constant pursuit of romance, Franky attempts to navigate the mercilessly harsh world of dating. There’s just one caveat: he suffers from schizophrenia and recently decided to liberate himself from his medication. After losing his job because of his illness, things take a tragically funny turn for the not-so-good. When he finds a genuine connection with Alex, he inadvertently sets on a path towards self-actualization. Franky searches to uncover the truths about his family’s past in hopes to bring him peace and clarity. However, what he finds may in fact cloud his reality further.

Interview with Alev Aydin and Troy Daniel Smith

BolderLife Festival:  Would you please introduce yourself?

Alev: My name is Alev Aydin. I’m the writer and one of the Executive Producer/Producers on LONELY BOY. I also play the lead character (Franky).

Troy: I’m Troy Daniel Smith, the Producer/Executive Producer of LONELY BOY. Together with Alev Aydin and Raheem Williams, we are Exit 43 Productions.

BolderLife Festival:  How did you find the idea for “Lonely Boy”?

Alev:  Over three years ago, my mother was diagnosed with brain cancer. When talking to my mother about her illness post-diagnosis, we both realized that in the months prior to us finding out about the cancer, she had been exhibiting behavior that was very symptomatic of paranoid schizophrenics. The location of her tumor was causing chemical imbalances in her brain that resulted in a myriad of symptoms. In personally coping with her diagnosis, and acting as her caretaker, I sought a creative outlet for the deeply emotional and at times, heartbreaking position I found myself in. I decided to write a script. That script is LONELY BOY.

BolderLife Festival:  What do you think about BolderLife’s  vision/mission statement?

Troy: Too often films become “Hollywood-ized” and have to tie everything up and end on a positive note, and don’t get me wrong, those are great, inspirational stories. But real life isn’t always that clean and simple, and I don’t think films have to be either. People struggle with adversity everyday, and it’s that journey to overcome which drives us as people.

BolderLife Festival: Do you live a bolder life? What do you personally think how to live a bolder life?

Troy:  I think all filmmakers, artists, or just people in general who live life on their terms lead a bolder life. Exploring new ventures and not settling for the ordinary are admirable qualities, in life and in film.

Thank you very much!
